LITIGATION EXPERIENCE
Our team offers more than a combined 35 years of litigation experience.
Ryther Law Group proudly serves Los Angeles, San Diego, Palm Desert, Orange County, Ventura County, Riverside County, and surrounding areas in Southern California.
Jill L. Ryther, Esq., Founder and Managing Partner
Jill founded RLG in 2009, and immediately began an impressive legal career that involved her work successfully defending well known animal rights activists, working with animal rights educator, Ric O’Barry in Taiji, Japan, to bring awareness to the dolphin slaughter (documented in The Cove), and successfully litigating against corporate giants like PetSmart and Costco for their mistreatment of animals. Additionally, Jill has successfully represented human companions of dogs that were shot and killed by police officers and achieved the first CA settlement ever to require officers to receive training on dog behavior and non-lethal methods.
Jill has worked with the Beagle Freedom Project on several rescues, including the rescue of 41 Beagles from a laboratory in Spain. Jill has saved many dogs from dangerous dog hearings. And she campaigned in West Hollywood to outlaw the sale of fur within the city limits.
In recent years, Jill has led Ryther Law Group in noteworthy lawsuits against additional corporate giants, such as PetsMart, Rover.com, and Pet’s Only Cremations, and has initiated multiple lawsuits against various cities and animal control agencies across the state of California for violating the rights of animal families, successfully advocating for the return of dogs to their families and achieving compensation for her clients. Jill currently serves as regular counsel for well-known rescues across the state, and continues to expose fraudulent veterinarians for their mistreatment of animals.
Jill has also litigated many death row cases against various animal control agencies, bringing incarcerated animals back to their families, as well as successfully filed false advertising lawsuits against companies, veterinarians, and sham rescue organizations for publicly stating they treat animals one way, and behind closed doors treating them another.
Jill does not shy away from cases that are the first of their kind, and is known for getting judges as well as opposing attorneys to see animals as they truly are: not mere property as the law declares, but as the sentient family members that so many of us love and protect.

Sarah A. Thompson, Partner
Sarah A. Thompson joined Ryther Law Group in 2022, bringing substantial litigation skills and experience from her work in family law. She became a Partner in 2024.
Sarah grew up in Orange County, California and attended Villanova University, graduating magna cum laude with a major in Sociology and minors in French and Political Science in 2012.
She earned her Juris Doctorate from the University of San Francisco School of Law (“USF”), graduating with honors in 2015, and earning numerous merit awards, including awards in Administrative Law, Family Law, and Evidence. She was admitted to the California Bar in 2015. At USF, Sarah obtained a certificate in Public Interest Law, in part due to her volunteer work with the San Francisco SPCA. All of her legal internships focused on public interest, including internships with Legal Advocates for Children and Youth, the Dependency Team with the Office of the City Attorney of San Francisco, and USF’s Criminal Law Clinic. During law school, Sarah also participated in the Intensive Advocacy Program where she learned essential trial skills from premier litigators and judges from across the county.
Before joining the firm, Sarah practiced family law for five years in both San Francisco and Los Angeles. Sarah also taught Legal Drafting as an adjunct faculty member at USF for two years. Sarah came to the firm with significant courtroom and trial experience, mostly in domestic violence restraining order matters. (In fact, as a certified law clerk, Sarah won her first two trials while still in law school.)
Additionally, Sarah has been selected as a Rising Star by Super Lawyers for five years in a row (2020 through 2024), an independent, peer-ranking board established by Los Angeles Magazine, and she has been a frequent contributor to legal journals. For instance, the Los Angeles Daily Journal published a few of Sarah’s articles, including “Supplemental Discovery Requests: An underused tool in an era of delay” in 2020.
Since joining the firm, Sarah has been lead attorney in many trials and administrative hearings, such as two trials where she successfully prevented the euthanasia of our client’s canine companions after bite incidents, multiple successful domestic violence restraining order trials, small claims appeals, and a three-week jury trial in August 2023, where Sarah won punitive damages and emotional distress damages in a veterinary malpractice matter, an exceptionally rare result.
Sarah has also appeared on radio, news, and YouTube interviews concerning animal rights and her various cases. Most recently, Sarah was instrumental in securing the safe release of 29 wolf dogs from the City of Barstow and Shasta County.
Sarah is a member of the Los Angeles County Bar Association, Beverly Hills Bar Association, and Riverside County Bar Association. And Sarah is currently obtaining an LLM (a Masters in Law) in Animal Law from Lewis & Clark Law School.
Sarah enjoys yoga, cooking (as a proud vegan), wine tasting, and travel, as well as hiking with her three rescue wolf dogs – Roku, Rhea, and Attis. Sarah also supports various animal rescues. Having a special affinity for wolf dogs, she volunteers with Apex Protection Project, including sponsoring a wolf dog yearly, assisting with legal issues, and reviewing foster, adoption, and surrender applications. Sarah and her husband have just opened an animal advocacy and sanctuary nonprofit organization, Red Wolf Rescue. Finally, Sarah works with Jill as a rescue partner and attorney with Expand Animal Rights Now.
Autumn M. Williams, Esq., Associate Attorney
Autumn M. Williams joined Ryther Law Group in 2022 as an intern during her first year of law school. It was at this time she decided that Animal Law was the career path for her. She interned and externed with RLG during her time in law school, until she came on as a full-time law clerk after graduation, and finally as an attorney upon passing the California State Bar in November 2024
Autumn grew up in Riverside County, California, where she graduated high school early to begin chasing her dream career of becoming an attorney. Upon high school graduation, she simultaneously attended Palomar College and Mount San Jacinto Community College to complete her general education requirements. Following this, she attended California State University, San Marcos where she graduated on the Dean’s List in 2021, majoring in Political Science.
She earned her Juris Doctorate from California Western School of Law in San Diego, where she graduated in 2024. During her time in law school, Autumn served as President of the school’s chapter of the Student Animal Legal Defense Fund where she and her co-members hosted animal rights education events and fundraisers. Autumn also became a member of the Pro Bono Honors Society due to her work with the Center for Community Solutions—a nonprofit organization dedicated to ending relationship and sexual violence. Autumn additionally spent four months volunteering in the Domestic Violence Restraining Order Clinic offering free services to those seeking protections.
Since joining Ryther Law Group full-time in September 2024, Autumn has participated in administrative hearings for dog bite incidents and provided trial support. She has contributed to the successful defense and release of dogs who otherwise would have been euthanized. Autumn has also taken part in high profile cases such as an arbitration against Rover and trial against the City of Burbank.
In her spare time Autumn enjoys going to the beach, cooking, and spending time with her two rescue dogs, Koda and Bodhi. Koda is a Labrador who has beaten cancer twice and had to have a lobe of his lung removed, and Bodhi is a Golden Retriever who was abandoned by his family with a pet sitter before finding his forever home with Autumn.
